To:                  Participants in the 2019 Smithsonian Folkways certificate course
                        in World Music Pedagogy
From:             Patricia Shehan Campbell, Amanda C. Soto, Christopher Roberts

We are eager to meet you in a few weeks at the 11th annual Smithsonian Folkways certification course in World Music Pedagogy.  We will begin promptly at 8:30 AM in Room 35 (the “sub-basement”) of the UW School of Music, on Monday, June 24, and will have an intensive short-course ahead of us in which a grand variety of musical-cultural experiences and pedagogical techniques will be explored and examined.  The course schedule is attached to this email.
What do you need?  A general sense of World Music Pedagogy, to be found at
https://folkways.si.edu/course-resources.  Please visit the Smithsonian Folkways website and browse through the available resources and free world music lesson plans.   We have attached a short reading for you to complete prior to the course.  You can also find relevant readings on our website.  Also, please bring the following, and we will supply the rest for a lively week of musical thought and action.

  • Your musicianship (with attention to singing, playing, listening, dancing)
  • Your positive energy and high enthusiasm
  • Comfortable clothes (for when we get down on the floor, dance, and ‘game’)
  • A laptop computer (for taking notes, accessing Smithsonian Folkways and other materials/methods)
  • A recorder (instrument! although we also have some which can be sterilized)
  • Optional: One or more ‘other’ band or orchestral instrument(s) if they are portable
  • Your lunch (or you can run out for the hour-long lunch); no refrigeration available
  • A water bottle
  • Thoughts about “a favorite culture” whose music you’ve always wanted to know more about, to learn and to teach
  • Some ideas you’ve found useful for teaching a world music culture
  • It would be helpful to download a piano app and notation app or free software (i.e. musescore, finale notepad, noteflight) Assistance will be given to those who are unfamiliar with notation software
  • Some open evening times:
  • ‘a little homework’—compiling a selection of pedagogical ideas for teaching a favorite musical culture or practicing a song/dance
  • getting together at Ivar’s Salmon House (Monday, at the end of the day’s sessions)
  • continuing discussions (as interested)
  • **Please note that the course will be held in Rm. 35, which requires the ability to climb two flights of stairs.  There is no elevator access to this part of the building.  Please contact us if this will be an issue for you.**

You are heading to a certification in World Music Pedagogy, conferred by the University of Washington in corroboration with Smithsonian Folkways. You will be developing competence in musical expressions from an array of the world’s cultures as well as pedagogical know-how in designing and delivering these musics to learners in various contexts, and we’ll share in a short contribution from you on “teaching a favorite musical culture” on the final day of the course.
We look forward to our time together at the end of June!  Please be in touch with us (michikos@uw.edu) for any questions you may have.
